Namchi’s Banashree Rai Wins Silver at National Boxing Championship
Banashree Rai, a 14-year-old student from PM Shree NGSSS, has made Namchi proud by securing a silver medal at the All India Inter SAI Regional Boxing Championship 2024. The event, held in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, from November 4 to 17, featured top athletes from across the country competing for glory.

A Remarkable Journey to Success
Banashree competed in the 43-46 kg sub-junior girls category and represented Team Guwahati in the championship. Over the course of the tournament, she faced three formidable opponents, defeating two of them to secure her place on the podium.
Having taken up boxing in 2022, Banashree’s rapid rise in the sport is commendable. She trains under the Sports Authority of India’s (SAI) STC program and is also affiliated with the Namchi District Boxing Association. Her dedication to rigorous training sessions has been the cornerstone of her success, helping her refine her skills and boost her confidence with each passing day.

Inspiration Behind the Gloves
Banashree credits her achievements to the guidance of her coaches, who have instilled discipline and technical expertise in her game. Reflecting on her performance, she shared, “I try to remember every detail my coach teaches me and implement it in the ring.”
Despite her modesty, Banashree possesses an impressive grasp of boxing fundamentals. While she admits she is still mastering the six basic moves and over 200 combinations, her favorite technique, the “left-back-right” combination, is executed with precision and has become one of her strengths in the ring.
Breaking Barriers and Inspiring Change
Banashree’s success is not just a personal milestone but a powerful message about breaking gender stereotypes in sports. She believes that skill, passion, and perseverance transcend gender and hopes to inspire other young girls to take up boxing or pursue their dreams in any field.
“There’s no limit to what you can achieve if you work hard and stay committed,” she said, emphasizing the importance of resilience and self-belief. Her story is a testament to the growing representation of women in sports, particularly in fields like boxing, which have traditionally been male-dominated.

Support from Namchi and Beyond
Banashree’s achievement has been widely celebrated in Namchi and beyond. Her family, friends, and the coach and her seniors received her in Melli Checkpost. Her school, PM Shree NGSSS, also expressed pride in her accomplishment, praising her as a role model for other students.
The Namchi District Boxing Association, which has been instrumental in nurturing her talent, has lauded her achievement as a victory for the entire region. “Banashree is a shining example of what hard work and the right support can achieve. She has set a high standard for young athletes in Namchi,” said an official from the association.

Looking Ahead
Banashree is determined to take her boxing career to greater heights. With aspirations to compete professionally, she remains focused on improving her skills and gaining more experience. “I want to continue boxing for as long as possible and make my mark on the national and international stage,” she shared.
Her journey is just beginning, but Banashree has already established herself as a rising star in Indian boxing. Her silver medal at the All India Inter SAI Regional Boxing Championship 2024 is a stepping stone to what promises to be an illustrious career.
As Namchi celebrates her success, Banashree continues to train hard, driven by her dreams and the hope of bringing more laurels to her hometown and state.
