Ornamental Fish Farming in Namchi; Opportunities

Recently, the Department of Fisheries Namchi have introduced ornamental fish farming to the public. It has brought a new opportunity in the economy of the farmers. Almost forty interested farmers have taken the benefits from the Department.

Opportunities of Ornamental Fish Farming

Ornamental fish farming is lost to the individual interest in Namchi. But the Department of Fisheries Namchi has recently shared PMMSY scheme of the government. The scheme allows the support of rupees one lakh eighty thousand to the interested farmers. The amount covers for first batch fishes, feed for one year, and the construction of six aquariums.

However the scheme is limited to individuals falling under ST and SC. Only the women candidates of General and OBC will profit from the scheme.

The Profit of Ornamental Fish Farming

Fisheries Guard, Bir Bahadur Rai, of Namchi shares that the profit margin from ornamental fish is quite high.

He shares that the highest margin comes from the sellers who learn fish breeding. Three female and one male breeders can produce upto one thousand fishes. The minimum price of smaller fishes varies from rupees twenty to rupees thirty. The selling of the bigger fishes reaches to rupees seventy to rupees eighty. And the breeds reach upto rupees two hundred and fifty.

Challenges of Breeding Ornamental Fish

BB Rai shares that the challenges lie in the knowledge of fish farming. Some beneficiaries from rural areas have already left fish farming.He shares that the over feeding of fish kills them. And with the growth in the size of the fishes requires bigger aquariums.
