Geographical Society of SAU Inaugurated On May 22

The Geography Department of Sikkim Alpine University (SAU), inaugurates it’s first ever ‘Geographical Society’, with executives formed of the MA/MSc students from first year Geography Department, on May 22. The theme of the SAU Geographical Society is, ‘exploring nature, people, and society’.

Today’s inauguration programme highlighted an oath taking ceremony of the newly elected executive members and class representatives.

The ten executive members and four representatives of classes, underwent a democratic election procedure, prior to the inauguration today. And the Society will be led and handled by them in participation of all the students from Geography Department.

The Society will look after the four main events this year; plantation drive, classroom maintenence, sports event, and seminar/workshop with guest teachers. The each of these events will be held on the month of June, July, August and September, respectively, as planned by the members, and the board of advisors.

The permanent board of advisors is formed of the HoD and Professors and Assistant Professors of Geography Department, and the executive members will be elected democratically, once every year, as decided.

Dr. Pribat Rai, Professor Geography Department, who is behind the idea of forming this Society, has shared that the Society will work not only inside the college, but will collaborate with the students and teachers of other Universities as well. The main motive of having this Society is to meet the criterion laid down by the new Education Policies, and make academia a holistic ground for learning. He has also shared that the constitution of the Society will lead both the executive body and the board of advisors.

Dr. Pribat is very optimistic on the development of networking skill of the students, and that it will benefit SAU in the coming days. However, he is more concerned about the sustainability right now, he expressed.
