In line with a visionary outlook to celebrate the 50 years of statehood, Sikkim’s Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang (Golay) has taken a step by proposing to host internationally renowned artist Ed Sheeran as part of the anniversary celebrations.

This initiative seeks to elevate Sikkim’s profile on the global stage, attract international attention, and foster economic growth through tourism, cultural exchange, and business opportunities, SKM press release mentions.

However, a political party of Sikkim, the Citizen Action Party (CAP), have chosen to criticize this initiative.

Their objections include concerns over financial prioritization which the ruling SKM party should have taken.

While the SKM Party is only working on the vision of bringing long-term benefits to Sikkim’s economy and its youth.

The Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) strongly condemns the CAP’s attempts to divert attention from developmental goals by opposing a globally significant initiative, the CAP risks denying Sikkim an opportunity to align with India’s broader vision of becoming a global cultural and economic hub, writes Yougen Tamang in a press release.

Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi recently emphasized India’s potential to thrive as a “concert economy,” citing the success of Coldplay’s performances in Mumbai and Ahmedabad. However, President, All Sikkim Youth Welfare Council, CAP Sikkim, TR Nepal still criticizeds SKM’s press release to be nothing more than a desperate attempt to justify misplaced spending while ignoring the real problems of Sikkim. “The people of Sikkim deserve visionary leadership that prioritizes sustainable development, not one that indulges in grand spectacles to cover up its failures” Nepal writes. CAP stands with the people and will continue to advocate for policies that truly uplift Sikkim’s economy and future, he mentioned.
