The Undiscovered Trekking Route of Tendong Hill

Tendong Hill, located near Namchi in South Sikkim, is a sacred and historically significant hill that holds deep cultural and ecological importance. Rising to about 8,530 feet, it offers breathtaking views of the Eastern Himalayas, including the majestic Kanchenjunga range. But, it still is an undiscovered trekking site.

Tendong Hill is perfect for adventure lovers, nature enthusiasts, and spiritual seekers. Would you like help with an itinerary or travel arrangements? You can always get help from the local tours and travel agencies from Namchi, or you can get informed about the place from the Department of Tourism and Civil aviation, Namchi Division.

Why Trek to Tendong Hill?

A short getaway from the busy bustle of the town below. Namchi is the second district of Sikkim, due to its population, administration and largest electoral constituency. If you like the quiet from the city, and relate yourself a little bit more to the nature, you must visit Tendong hill for a short trekking to recollect yourself.

Beautiful Himalayan Views – See Kanchenjunga and nearby peaks.

Tendong Hill is a popular trekking destination, with trails starting from Damthang, about 13 km from Namchi. The trek is moderate and takes around 3-4 hours through lush forests. The summit offers 360-degree panoramic views of Sikkim, Darjeeling, and even parts of Bhutan. A small watchtower at the top provides a stunning vantage point.

Rich Biodiversity – Spot rare flora and fauna.

Tendong Hill is covered with dense forests rich in biodiversity, including rare orchids, rhododendrons, and medicinal plants. It serves as a habitat for various wildlife species such as: Red Pandas, Barking Deer, Himalayan Black Bears, and numerous bird species.

Sacred & Peaceful Environment – A site of Lepcha legends and Buddhist meditation and Hindu rituals in Ramanvami.

Ramnavami (Ramnawami) at Tendong Hill is a significant celebration, particularly for Hindu devotees in Sikkim. Though Tendong Hill is primarily a sacred site for the Lepcha community, it also holds importance for Hindu pilgrims, especially during Ramnavami, the festival marking the birth of Lord Rama. While Tendong Hill is more commonly associated with Tendong Lho Rum Faat (a Lepcha festival), Ramnavami is also observed here as part of the broader religious traditions in Sikkim.

Tendong Hill is primarily associated with the Lepcha community, but it also holds significance for the Bhutia community in Sikkim. The Bhutias, who follow Tibetan Buddhism, recognize Tendong Hill as an important natural and spiritual site due to its connection with Buddhist traditions and the region’s sacred geography. The Bhutias, who follow Mahayana Buddhism (particularly the Nyingma and Kagyu sects), regard Tendong Hill as a sacred site where Buddhist monks and hermits have meditated for centuries. A Buddhist monastery and small stupas are present at the hilltop, adding to its religious importance. Many Bhutia monks and lay practitioners visit the hill for meditation and retreats, as it provides a peaceful, isolated environment.

Tendong Hill is deeply revered by the Lepcha community, who believe it served as a refuge during a great flood in ancient times. The word “Tendong” means “The Upraised Horn” in the Lepcha language, referring to the myth that the hill rose to save people from drowning. A small monastery at the top is a place of meditation and worship for Buddhist monks and devotees.

The Tendong Lho Rum Faat, an important Lepcha festival, is celebrated annually in August to honor the hill’s mythical role in saving their ancestors. The festival includes rituals, storytelling, and prayers.

Less Crowded Trail – Unlike other treks in Sikkim, this one is relatively undiscovered.

Tendong hill has the potential to become a popular eco-trekking destination. It is ideal for nature lovers, bird watchers, and spiritual seekers while in town. Tendong Hill is a must-visit for nature lovers, trekkers, and those interested in Sikkim’s indigenous culture.

Unlike other trekking destinations in Sikkim, like, Goechala Trek, Dzongri Trrek, and Singalila Ridge Trek, trekking in Tendong Hill is only about a half day activity, which is probably best for discovering culture and natural richness of Sikkim. If you are staying in the town, ask the local guides for the visit. As the route is densely covered with the fauna of the mountain, one can easily get lost with the multiple routes present within the forest.
