SARAH Gangtok Leads Sterilization Drive for Stray Dogs in Namchi

A total of 19 female dogs and 5 male dogs in Kisan Market Namchi, have undergone the sterilization. Sikkim Anti Rabies Animal Health (SARAH) Gangtok organizes sterilization of stray dogs from Namchi town. In collaboration of Namchi Veterinary Department and the support of People for Animals Sikkim (PFA). The Youth Association of Namchi-Singithang, were coordinators of the animal welfare cause.

The canines were given drugs for post operative care. Antimicrobial vaccines, antibiotics, painkiller and anti-inflammatory vaccines. The drugs will work for next 72 hours. The other post operative cares include – not feeding the operative animals for next five hours. And preventing them from getting wet.

The sterilization were done by Dr. Shajib Hang Limboo, with vet aide, Phurba Tshering Bhutia, and vet aide, Hishey Dorjee Bhutia, from SARAH Gangtok. They were assisted by Dr. Miwang Tsedup Tamang, from Namchi.

According to Dr. Shajib Hang Limboo, the record of rabies is not found in Sikkim after 2017. The population control of stray dogs, through neutralization, is also a method of controlling rabies, he explains.

The pet owners’ responsibilities include – providing timely de-worming medicines, vaccination and other treatments. It further states that the re-habitat of canines to street or wilderness is illegal. Killing the pets for unplanned breeding is also illegal.
