Fungal Outbreak Kills Musure Katus Trees in Soreng, Sikkim – Experts Investigate
A concerning environmental crisis has emerged in the Don Bosco region of Malbasey, Soreng, as a large number of Musure Katus trees (Castanopsis indica) have been reported dead. This unexpected die-off has raised alarms among environmentalists and local communities.

After receiving reports from concerned citizens, a team of experts from the Rain Forest Research Institute (RFRI), Jorhat, under the Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change, Government of India, along with officials from the Forest & Environment Department, Government of Sikkim, visited the affected site on February 27, 2025.
Cause of Tree Mortality Identified

Following preliminary research, the expert team identified a fungal infection as the primary cause of the Musure Katus tree die-off. While further analysis is ongoing, the situation is being closely monitored to prevent its spread to other vegetation.
