Rabin Rai Resigns from the Post of General Secretary of SKM Panchayat Cell

12th September, 2023: In a surprising turn of events, Rabin Rai, the General Secretary of the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) Namchi District Panchayat Cell, has tendered his resignation to the party president, PS Tamang. Rai’s decision to step down from his prominent role has sent shockwaves through the SKM party and the political landscape of Sikkim.

Rabin Rai, a seasoned political figure and a dedicated member of the SKM party, was actually a lone candidate from Kerala-based party during the general election of 2019. His leadership within the Panchayat Cell was marked by the party for having the background of his studies on rural areas, and the party leaders left him to connect with the people at the grassroots level. Under his tenure, the SKM party made significant inroads into rural and urban Panchayats of Namchi District, winning the trust of many and left the profits of more than eighty thousand rupees in the Cell’s fund.

One of the key factors behind Rai’s resignation appears to be a growing rift within the SKM party. While specific details were only vividly revealed by Rabin Rai at his residence in the evening yesterday, it is still safe to say that ideological differences and internal conflicts played a significant role in his decision. These differences may pertain to the party’s direction, policies, or the handling of various issues which is another aspect that cannot be ignored in the political landscape of Sikkim.

Since coming to power, the SKM party has faced numerous challenges, including governance issues, opposition from other political parties, and managing the aspirations of the diverse population of Sikkim. Rai’s resignation could be seen as a reflection of the challenges that the party faces in maintaining unity and cohesion.

It is essential to highlight the timing of Rai’s resignation, which comes at a critical juncture for the SKM party with the next general election to be held only next year. The party has been working towards consolidating its position in Sikkim politics and delivering on its electoral promises, in addition to services to Sikkime people during the Covid-19 pandemic, bringing back Sikkimese from abroad for safety from the Russia-Ukraine war, and financial support to entrepreneurs, medical treatments and higher studies to individuals, and man more in the last four and a half years. However, Rai’s departure may lead to further uncertainty within the party, potentially impacting its election campaign.

Furthermore, Rai’s resignation could have repercussions on the Panchayat Cell itself. As a prominent leader within this specific branch of the SKM party, his departure might trigger a leadership vacuum and disrupt the cell’s functioning.

It is still in the waiting, as to how will the party president respond to his resignation, or what speculations the party functionaries will have on the matter.

And as for the party itself, it remains to be seen how the SKM party will manage the fallout from Rai’s resignation. Whether it will lead to further internal reshuffling, changes in party dynamics, or a renewed focus on addressing internal issues, all is yet to be determined.

But, it has also become the dire need for the party to move forward unitedly and continue working towards its goals, with this in mind that the general election of Sikkim is going to be commenced only in next few more months’ time.

Rabin Rai’s resignation from the post of General Secretary of SKM Panchayat Cell represents a significant moment in the SKM party’s journey. It underscores the challenges of maintaining unity within a political party

and managing internal conflicts. But, as Sikkim continues to watch closely, the party’s response to this resignation will likely shape its future trajectory, and therefore, in the state’s political landscape.
