Sikkim University Hosts Filmmaking Workshop with Renowned Director Samten Bhutia

The Department of Mass Communication at Sikkim University successfully concluded a three-day intensive Filmmaking and Direction Workshop, led by acclaimed filmmaker Samten Bhutia. Held from March 17 to 19, the workshop offered hands-on training in filmmaking, providing students with a rare opportunity to learn from an industry veteran whose work has shaped regional cinema in Sikkim and Nepal.

Bridging Academia and the Film Industry

Coordinated by Dr. Niharika Buragohain (Assistant Professor) and supported by Dorjee Sherpa (Technical Assistant), the workshop created an immersive learning experience where students engaged in rigorous training from morning till midnight. Bhutia, along with his team—Moni Raj Paudel (Chief Assistant Director) and Binesh Rai (Cinematographer)—guided participants through the complexities of scriptwriting, cinematography, direction, and on-set coordination.

The students, from 2nd and 4th semesters, gained firsthand exposure to the challenges of real-time filmmaking, an experience that bridged the gap between theoretical knowledge and industry practices. The workshop reinforced Sikkim University’s commitment to practical filmmaking education, equipping young storytellers with the skills needed to navigate the evolving world of cinema.
