Exploring Societal Norms: ‘Degree Maila’ Premieres at Imperial Talkies, Unveiling the Perils of Knowledge in Nepal’s Villages
On May 16, Imperial Talkies, a GBT Entertainment movie theatre of Namchi Sikkim, premiered ‘Degree Maila.’ It officially released in India on May 17.
The viewers of the premiere highlighted that the movie focuses on education. And expressed dislike toward the tyranny of oppression on a learned person. Others eagerly anticipated the protagonist’s return to his village for the second time.

Earlier, Ram Babu Gurung, of Nepal, majorly popularized Mustang for its tourism values through his movies. Due to the films, the trekkers visit Mustang as their holiday destination. Accordingly, The picturesque hills of Degree Maila is equally attractive.
The movie starts with scenes of poet society and the suffrage of poets. It was nonlinear. However, the film then takes the audience back to the start of Degree Maila’s journey. He comes from his village, with promises. The tragedy and humor in every scene lead the viewers to the climax, where the story of a learned person ends, or begins.
Ram Babu Gurung’ Degree Maila keeps the audience at their toes. Finishing and starting the second journey of Degree Maila to Kathmandu.
A revolution started by an educated man turned him from being a hero to a villain of the society. The film clearly brought the hidden societal norms of the least explored villages of Nepal. And professed their trust in the knowledge of an outsider.
The quote by Martin Luther King, Jr. about “sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity,” explains the nature of Degree Maila the best. The film expresses how he is seen by his society and how he sees other people.
