Namchi Police Crack Mamring Homicide: Ex-Lover Arrested for Strangulation Over Financial Dispute

Namchi Police press conference on Mamring homicide case, Sikkim

Namchi, 3rd September, 2025:

Namchi Police has unfolded the real case of a homicide from Mamring ward of Mamring-Turung GPU on September 02. During a press conference in the chamber of SSP Namchi, Karma Gyamtso Bhutia, on September 03, he has mentioned that the victim was killed due to strangulation by her ex-lover, over a rage due to financial misunderstanding.

According to reports, the the Police had earlier registered the case as unnatural death. However, they didn’t conclude the case there, the police informed. The death of a 30 years old Sita Chettri, of Soreng District, still had more to it than what was earlier speculated by the Police. Their findings deepened with the ‘last seen by’ investigation they persuaded. The police is thankful towards Amber Bahadur Chettri, a sarathi by profession, who informed police that he saw the victim and the accused on August 29, in the area.

Through the digital footprints of the mobile phones of the accused and the victim, the police found the last used place to be at Siliguri. And with the help of Motigara Police, Namchi Police apprehended, one Sangay Dorjee Sherpa, of Sombarey, West Sikkim, who was later recognised as the accused of the crime on September 02, who was on the fleeing.

According to the police findings, the victim and the accused were in a living relationship while working in a Pharma Company at Mamring. And after having the relationship over a year, they had broken up, before patching up again on August this year.

The further queries have led to the findings, that the former lovers started living together again, at the house of one Dawa Gurung, at Mamring. Sita Chettri was running a small restaurant and living there alone since she broke up with her ex-lover. However, on August, 31, the police was informed on the foul smelling from the house by one Ghaneshyam Chettri, an employee of Alkem Company of Mamring. Following the FIR, the police acted on the case with IO Siddhart Subba, SHO Ashish Bhujel and SDPO Bikash Tewari, and team.

The police retracted the body and was sent for post-mortem examination that same day.

Shockingly, the initial speculating of the police on the case as a UD case, was because of the staging created at the scene, it was informed today. The accused Sangay Dorjee Sherpa have revealed to the police that he devised a scene to mislead the searches. And the room where the body was found didnot belong to either of them, but they knew about the place when they were living together before they broke up for the first time. But it belonged to the same building she was running her business.

The police have have informed that the accused and the victim had a long standing quarrels over the financial lending and returning with eachother, and a certain amount of money deposited in a brach of India Post Office. On the day this unfortunate event took place, the quarrel took the form of physical attack upon the duo leading the accused to overpower the victim, the police has informed.

The police have speculated that the incident may occured 1pm and 2pm of August 29, the police has shared.

Currently, the accused is under police custody for further investigation, in Namchi PS.

SSP Namchi have also requested the media fraternity to verify facts before publishing homicidal contents and not rely on DSR reports alone. He has requested sensitivity on such cases as sometimes the media reports may hinder on police investigation.
