The Innovator of Temi: How Prashant Lamechaney Is Shaping Sikkim’s Science Culture

Prashant Lamechaney, 29, is an emerging innovation technologist and multidisciplinary graphic design practitioner who operates a fully equipped print-production unit in his native town of Temi, Namchi District. With a portfolio exceeding 300 STEM-driven prototypes, Prashant has achieved an exceptional track record—eight out of his nine flagship innovations have been shortlisted by the National Innovation Foundation (NIF)–India.

His innovation trajectory began early: his first nationally recognized prototype was accepted when he was in Class IX (age 16), though his foundational curiosity in applied physics and experimental science was sparked much earlier, around Class VI (age 12). Over the years, he has represented Sikkim at four national-level science exhibitions, showcasing high-impact, problem-solving models.

Prashant has also functioned as a grassroots innovation mentor, guiding seven students from Temi-Namphing EC in developing indigenous prototypes. All seven were subsequently able to qualify and participate in national science fairs, demonstrating strong innovation-transfer capabilities under his mentorship.

His latest R&D output, a biodegradable hybrid utility cutlery unit integrating a paper-napkin module (popularly described as an “eco-friendly spoon with integrated paper napkin”), is currently undergoing the patent evaluation process under the Department of Science & Technology in collaboration with NIF-India.

While awaiting patent clearance, Prashant has diversified his engagement by leveraging his telescope to build a community-oriented astro-tourism model aimed at enhancing the tourism profile of the Temi Tea Estate. Through this, he aims to create a niche fusion of scientific outreach and destination branding.
