Yasika Rai Clinches Silver; Coach Vows International Glory by 2026
Sikkim’s, Yasika Rai has brought home a silver medal from the 8th National Elite Women Boxing Championship 2025, held in Greater Noida, last month. Representing the state, Yasika triumphed in five consecutive bouts before falling short in the final. Reflecting on her performance, Yasika shared that her height was a challenge against her taller opponent, in securing the gold.
However, Yasika’s base coach, Mukesh Rai, remains focused on future goals. A Star II certified coach, Mukesh Rai is currently mentoring athletes at SAI STC Namchi. Coach Mukesh Rai has a reputation for nurturing top-tier boxers from Namchi. With his trainees consistently featuring in national-level competitions and camps. And bringing medals to the State.

The news of her success followed celebrations in her native Omchu Ward, under Mamley GPU, with her fellow villagers expressing pride. They had gone as far as Melli Checkpost to give her a grand reception. The MLAs of Poklok-Kamrang and Namchi-Singithang constituencies also extended their congratulations and support. And the youths and women of both the constituencies had joined in the reception, on March 28.

Speaking at a press briefing in Namchi, on March 28, Coach Rai shared his mixed emotions about the outcome. “A gold medal is a gold medal,” he said. While adding that a silver medal is a proud achievement, his ultimate goal is the top podium spot from his pupils. He also shared that Yasika will soon join the national training camp, continuing her raise in boxing game.
The mentor-protégé relationship between Mukesh and Yasika spans over eight years of consistent effort and dedication. Yeshika’s athletic journey began not in the ring, but on the football field, Mukesh Rai shares. He noticed her natural agility and sharp movements during a local football match, from where picked her up to practice boxing. A decision that has proven to be transformative.
In a spontaneous conversation on April 6, in Namchi, Coach Rai has made a bold commitment. “NDBA will produce international-level boxers by 2026. If I fail to do that, I will step away from coaching.”
His confidence underlines his commitment not just to the athletes, but to the future of boxing in Namchi and Sikkim.
