Sikkim Reports Lives Lost And Properties Damaged Due To Heavy Rainfall

Sikkim, which is a small state in India, is facing disaster due to heavy rainfall. And the monsoon season has just started.

The largest river of Sikkim is Teesta river, which starts from North Sikkim, crosses East Sikkim and flows through South Sikkim before meeting rivers in west Bengal. Teesta river meets numerous towns and villages and national highway 10, as it pass through the state.

Due to the incessant rainfall from last week, Teesta river has increased it’s water level, and has covered some major towns and damaged roads and houses. Reports have been made that it has taken three human lives as well and three more is missing in North Sikkim.

Mangan District Along with Dzongu has been cut off from National Highway at several places because of the Teesta river water level raising to road level at Ravi Jhora in NH10. Whereas, local reports have said more than 10 Houses were damaged due to Incessant rain.

The situation in South Sikkim after water level increased has become dangerous to the residents. The public playground of Melli Bazar in Namchi district is filled with water due to water level increase. The people are staying on high alert since the damages are being reported one after the other.

The destruction in North Sikkim and Melli area in the South has led public panic and has forced residents to vacate their homes.

The Quick Response Team under Mangan Territorial Division, Forest Department has been undertaking relief and rescue operations in slide affected areas under Mangan District. And the administration in Namchi District have requested residents to stay on high alert.

As the reports and news of the damages are flowing in continuously, the lives are being lost, and the properties are being damaged. It will be long before the accounts of these disaster are made, and Sikkim is in need of relief from the disaster.
